When to Replace a Timing Belt or Chain?

Vintage BMWs, such as the renowned BMW 325, use timing belts. After this model, BMW transitioned to maintenance-free timing chains. However, as decades have passed, modern BMWs equipped with turbochargers may experience wear or stretching of timing chains due to lack of maintenance or spirited driving. BMW engines such as the N20 or N63 models, and today's modern B series, are also equipped with timing chains.

At some point during your vehicle's life, you will need to change the timing belt. Most vehicles require timing belt replacement at around 100,000 miles. Some cars have timing chains instead of belts, which can still stretch or break and may be noisier. Your car's owner's manual will specify when to change the timing belt. It's important to replace it before it becomes a serious problem. Many vehicles have complex internal systems that must work in perfect synchrony, and if the timing belt breaks, it can destroy internal engine parts and disrupt synchrony. This can happen so quickly that you might not receive a warning.

While You're At It…

When replacing your timing belt, consider replacing the water pump as well. The water pump runs on the same belt, and both components are often replaced together. This is because replacing the water pump involves nearly the same work as replacing the timing belt. While this does not apply to all makes of vehicles, it is common for most.

At our auto repair shop, our certified technicians have been replacing timing chains, timing belts, and water pumps for years. If your vehicle needs a new timing belt or timing chain, give us a call or schedule an appointment online.
